Uldus is a Russian photographer who studied in England at UAL and currently resides in her home country focussing on photographic art and fashion photography. She often photographs and makes light of Russian Fairytales and Stereotypes through her photographs. In 2014 she was named one of the top 100 women by the BBC.
The photos above are photographic illustrations of Russian Fairytales such as Soul of Forest, Baba Yaga, Fair Maidens and Tsarevna the Frog. These are some of my favourite photographs by Uldus as i like the way she adds creative aesthetics to let her images tell stories. I also the way the photographer is not afraid to experiment with different tones and colouring techniques as well as the use of special effects(smoke) to add to the overall feel of her images. I feel like this brings and suggests certain moods which adds to the story of the photograph.
An example of this is the second image in this post called 'Tsarevna the Frog'. In this image the reflections on the water are toned green and green is a common colour used to describe frogs. There is also a kind of blue tone which makes an image feel colder overall which suggests this story has a darker/mysterious side to it.
The last photo above is called 'Krasna devica' or Red beauty in english. This photo represents the goddess of modesty and freedom of youth. The Red beauty is now commonly known as a term for any young pretty girl in Russia. The visuals show young women grouping together in their youth and walking together in fields representing freedom. The name Red beauty has nothing to do with the colour however the photographer has used the colour red to create recognition for the tale.
The video below is from a TED talk Uldus did talking about her images and another series which plays with the idea of how people should be or want to be seen in the Russian society. In the talk she describes her thought processes going into her images which i found quite interesting.
