Photographer: Brooke Shaden
Brooke Shaden is an american photographer who creates surreal portraits using a mixture of photography and then later uses photoshop to bring her photos together. Brooke's work is always presented in square format with a mix of dark coloured tones. Every image is a separate piece that relates to a chosen theme or idea, usually a self portrait and coming from everyday life. The images all have a worn texture to them and so seem quite surreal and somewhat like paintings from the 1800's.
The first photo is called 'A balancing act of organisation' and it shows a woman balancing many water containing teacups on the top of her head. The idea behind this image may be to show that keeping organised is a balance between many different things in life, including work, everyday chores and hobbies. I feel like the water from the cups and the sea below are there to represent that if you complete all the little things (the cups) and target them one by one you won't be so weighed down by everything you have left to do (the sea).
The third photo above shows a girl holding onto a rope, looking down as some lightbulbs which seem too have the resemblance of snakes. For me the image represents the chasing of ideas, that we shouldn't run away or disregard them. Once one idea come into mine, more will follow.
