Photographer: Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson is an american photographer from Brooklyn, New York and is most well know for his production in his work. Most of Crewdson's work is highly produced with the use of lighting, staging, acting and assistance that goes into it. His most recognised work is those set in American homes and Neighbourhoods. Crewsdon puts a lot of thought and detail into his work which results in it coming together to create pieces that are visually surreal, haunting and somewhat unnerving.

Most of Crewdson's images contain objects and places that we see similarly everyday however the scenes he creates contain subjects that are somewhat disconnected which leave the overall feel of the images up to the viewer as no context is given.

The middle image above is from 2007 and shows a girl who is likely to be a teenager sitting on a swing in a trailer park. When looking closely you can also see a secondary subject that is a woman looking through a trailer window behind the girl and that the scene is set in the rain. For me personally the story that the image tells is that of conflict. I imagine the girl has had some sort of argument or inner conflict either with the lady looking from the trailer -which is perhaps her mother - or with someone who is not in the frame. The woman appears to be looking out of the window towards the direction of the girl who is sitting in the rain so it leaves me wondering wether the woman in looking at her in curiosity, worry or perhaps it is the motherly tendency to watch her child. The fact that its raining and the girl is still outside make the image feel as though she is not out there to enjoy herself but rather to get away and have a moment of thought.

The video below shows behind the scenes of the making if this image, here you can briefly see the set up and how lighting and special effects (how the rain is created when its not actually raining) are used to produce the vision Crewdson wishes to portray. Even though this may be a somewhat exaggerated example, the way these images are made shows how much visual consideration goes into creating successful images. Not only is the subject important but also the surroundings.
